If you are looking for a 'Hassle Free Start-up to Living in Costa Rica' then this property should be seen. Motivated Sellers listening to offers!
Perhaps you’ve dreamt about having a large property, large enough to grow whatever you desired, the thought of having a Chocolate Farm, never really entered your mind. Most folks think along more traditional lines, having a horse or two, some goats a few chickens and a well tended garden filled with organic goodies (which by the way you may still do here). But a Chocolate Farm? How many folks do you know that can boast about making their own Chocolate!
Chocolate trees can grow fairly large and bushy, about 15-20 feet high they are shade trees and the fruit which grow off the trunk and branches are quite large. The pods grow like mini-footballs (American football that is) pointed on the ends, the tree flowers all year round and can have pods and flowers at the same time. The pods can weigh up to a pound or more. Considering that chocolate was one of the main crops in Costa Rica many years ago, it’s been said, the chocolate market is on the re-bound, so you need to look ahead to the future. You can trade Chocolate! There will always be ‘room for chocolate’…………it’s a luxury, a treat; it makes you feel good, it’s delightful. It’s not like lettuce, you don’t get all warm and fuzzy thinking about ice-berg lettuce, but chocolate conjures up warm thoughts, love follows! So who wouldn’t want to have Chocolate in their lives? Remember when everyone thought Carob was the ‘healthy’ version of Chocolate and you could ‘pretend’ you were enjoying the real thing because it was believed it was not healthy! ……….wrong! it’s loaded with antioxidants…………you’ve been sold a bill of goods ……….they were right (marvin gaye & tammi terrell) when they sang….’Ain’t nothing but the real thing’ ………..It’s OK! Chocolate’s back big time! It never went away nor will it ever, it will always have a special place in culture. It’s something everyone can splurge for now and again, it’s not going away!..........if it ever came down to trading as a way of life, well, it would be like the ‘Cadillac of Cars’ (remember that saying?). Truly Chocolate is in a class by itself.
200 small trees have been planted since 2008, there has been one harvest recently and this rainy season more saplings will be introduced to the land. The Mother Tree near the main house is the ‘parent’ of all trees now growing on the farm, she is one of the best trees around and her fruits caught my eye years ago! Her well formed pods are the reddish version, a criollo strain. So the future looks bright as growth continues, and the owners will continue seeding and planting more trees.
The House and Workshop:
I get a homey feel for this combination. The times I’ve visited, there have been multiple children in and out, it’s a good thing, if you are a family or considering raising a family, the elementary school is next door, and it’s a small country affair, about 20 children, 2 classrooms, grades k-6.
The 3 bedroom/3 bathroom home is functional, and includes such items purchased less than 5 years ago, the Refrigerator, LP Gas Oven/Range, Large Capacity Ele. Washer and Dryer, on-demand hot water in the showers, upgraded and proper breaker box and electrical wiring, upgraded proper plumbing and septic tank. There is a living room, a laundry room, an office or a 4th bedroom, and a wonderful outdoor covered deck, which is a great area for guests and family. The modern eat-in kitchen is currently being upgraded, the owners have Timber Frame skills and construction in general has been a way of life …………For instance you’ll notice the staunch Timber Frame better known as ‘a bent’ as you enter the front of the house, these beams were placed up against the cement and the quality of workmanship and the size of the beams used are a gentle reminder that the enduring strength of wood is unmatched.
The Workshop out back is positioned lower than the house which is built on a slight rise, a side drive allows access to the workshop below and in this case the present owner/Timber Framer has been able to get large timbers in and out of his workshop. The workshop was constructed with the idea that at some point if the workshop would no longer be needed then it would be wise to build it so an easy conversion could follow.
Other Buildings with Rental Potential offer distinct sleeping quarters. Visitors could enjoy kitchen privileges, useage of laundry facilities while dining or enjoying the fresh air, rain or shine under-roof on the large covered deck.
• Big Tiny, so named for its big timbers but tiny footprint, Big Tiny was raised in Dec. 2011. This Cabin featuring exquisite joinery is steps from the main house, yet oriented for privacy and a view
of ‘Volcan Baru’ (Volcano Baru in Panama set in the distant) from the sleeping loft. Enclosure is in progress.
• Bodega, currently used as a storage shed, but also could easily be converted to sleeping quarters or used in a chocolate-making venture.
• La Casita (the small house)
Built as the local meeting house for members of the ‘Coffee Farmer Union’, this little house, roadside, currently serves as a public library for the local community however humble, it remains dry, cool and bright inside.
Coffee Plantation !
Yes, Chocolate is not complete without some Coffee and the 100 coffee plants which are only for personal consumption will be a hit when you are making those 'Chocolate covered Coffee Beans'....they make great Christmas gifts too for family and friends.
The other side of the Creek
Roughly dividing the farm is a creek which flows all year. Across the creek from the house and Cacao farm are 7 acres of former pasture land which has rested and is now regenerating and secondary growth has begun. Incorporating hardwoods in this area may be a good idea. In 2010 4 Acres were surveyed and a right-of-way purchased with the idea of segregating and selling this parcel. It would be easy today to complete the legalities and formalize this option. A house could be built as well or multiple houses. Perhaps friends or family would be interested in your new Costa Rican Adventure.
Annual property taxes on the home and land are $600 per year.
