If you are familiar with Golfito or have watched my site over the past 10 years you know what the ‘American Zone’ is all about.
If you are not familiar, then here’s a brief recap. The Banana Company built Golfito……..period. The ‘company’ first built the Hospital in 1938, the rest of the infrastructure followed, the deep water pier which is less than 100 mts off-shore, then housing for the workers and for the white collar workers. The white collar workers lived in an exclusive neighborhood with its own pool, tennis courts, airstrip and even a 9-hole 3 par golf course and clubhouse.
The white collar zone had a guard posted just past the hospital and it was forbidden for the blue collar workers to enter this area, you have to remember, the workers were a rough crowd back in those days mixed with Chinese rail road builders. Back then, building railroads in Central and South America were incredible feats, built by famous men, stories of this era are plentiful and working in the tropics was plagued with malaria, yellow fever and a host of other deadly tropical varmints like the poisonous fer-de-lance snake and an assortment of jungle creatures. Men were a rough lot, unskilled laborers looking for work and opportunity, cheap liquor and women flowed in Golfito. Men made their money and spent it here.
The classy white collared Americans had it easy with their large Banana Company Homes provided to them, playing golf, tennis and swimming in the pool………..quite a contrast to the action taking place in the center of town at the low-life cantinas.
The white collar zone became known as ‘The American Zone’ and can still be heard referred to occasionally.
Today the older homes in ‘the zone’ have kept their unique flavor and it has remained the best place to live in Golfito. The pool has been closed and sold, but replaced with an incredible pool and hotel, Hotel Casa Roland.
The homes in the American Zone have increased in Value while the higher priced homes have been completely renovated, the less priced homes will more than likely need a total renovation if increasing value and preservation is your goal.
Great Investments to hold for the future, waterfront marinas are always a strong possibility (as the bay is perfectly calm and doubly protected from the Pacific, the bay is situated in a protected area attached to our Gulf).
