Full Description:
If you’ve never been out to Carate (about 1.5 hours from Pte. Jimenez), on the Osa Peninsula, it’s the ‘end of the world’………but in a good way. I read somewhere it’s where the road ends and real life begins! Not only does the road end, you need to hike along the beach another 2.5 kms until you arrive.
This incredible jaw dropping Ocean Front 5 Acres borders the stream La Leona on one side and the other is the ‘La Leona Lodge’.
The 5 Acres was purchased nearly 20 years ago even before the La Leona Lodge and the Ranger Station existed. This property at that time, was the only activity, there was a beach house (more like a shack) and an old woman lived there with her 13 dogs and the German owner had a 2-story house tucked up behind the beach with forest around and fantastic views from inside the house. Today the 2-story house is no longer standing but the foundation is present, and the possibility exists to rebuild on the same cement pad.
There are currently 2 tent cabins, a third tent had to be taken down due to termite damage, but plans are to rebuild. There was an active cooking area with an old wood stove (tico style) and an old stainless steel commercial sink and counter top, running water, but again, the cooking area under roof needs upgrading and repair. As well the ‘community bath area,’ with two showers, toilets and sinks need upgrading, walls need to be raised again, there was more movement in the past.
Yes over the 20 years things have changed, the owners too are older getting to retirement stage and have enjoyed their time in this lovely remote beach area adjacent to Corcovado National Park.
One of the constructions is a small wooden structure on post and beam, The bedroom closes and locks, so currently it acts like a storage room, but when it is in use, it could suffice as a small home and perhaps could be rented out. The kitchen and dining area are under the same roof, so its used currently as the community kitchen, there is a ‘modern’ cooking gas stove-top, a large dining table and some seating with views toward the beach.
There is infrastructure in place, it all could use upgrading, there is no other place like it along this stretch of beach, especially bordering the National Park. This is a one-of-a-kind property.
The ‘development’ that has taken place over the past 20 years has been beneficial to the owners. There is now a lodge as I’ve mentioned called ‘La Leona Lodge’ it borders the 5 acres, and the entrance is at the beach just steps from the entrance to this property. The owners or visitors now can visit the lodge (owners have a very great relationship) have a meal, enjoy a drink at the bar, meet travelers, park guides, and enjoy a bit of ‘life’, whereas previously they were all alone. The lodge even has good Wi-Fi so the current owners enjoy visiting even more. It’s like family, the workers and guides are all local so one becomes good friends with the help and even the tico owners at the lodge have several families working together………..it’s quite busy at times. Enjoying dinner can be a great event as meals are served only between certain hours and there can be up to 60 persons enjoying meals together. A nice respite from the solitude, some socializing is needed. Many of the travelers to the lodge are European so a nice diverse and knowledgeable crowd is available. The lodge draws conservationist, naturalist and biologist from all over the world.
If anyone has a desire to venture further into Corcovado National Park, one could hike to the Sirena Ranger station which is 15 kms further along the beach and will take several hours in which to hike. I’ve done this hike years ago; the hot sun and soft sand makes for sore muscles and a sunburn. Great memories. There is also an airstrip at the Sirena Ranger station, it’s a great experience if one has the opportunity, now they only work by reservation. We pitched a tent years ago when we visited, I’m not sure what the current situation is like today. But all meals are included etc.
Note that Corcovado National Park is one-of-a-kind, in the world, and # 1 of Costa Rica’s National Parks.
People and Travelers visiting the lodge next door are seasonal. There are no vehicles allowed on the beaches in Costa Rica, but occasionally the lodge next door will run an atv on the beach but very seldom, travelers unable to walk or carry luggage are generally brought in by a horse and cart. Even though 2.5 kms from Carate is only about 25–30-minute hike.
Since the owners purchased the rights to this property years ago (note, beach properties in Costa Rica are not titled nor can they be ‘owned’ they remain property of the state and we are allowed to use and enjoy these kinds of properties. Today the property is no longer in the jurisdiction of the Golfito Municipality as before. Now it is in the hands of Minaet. This is the institution responsible for implementation, management and the administration of biodiversity in Costa Rica. To continue enjoying this unique property new owners will need to present and obtain permits to reside and operate here. These new rulings are to secure the protection of the delicate surrounding park lands.
If you would like to continue with what the owners have begun, we can outline steps that need to be taken to obtain gov’t permission so that you can continue enjoying this unique spot-on earth.
Possession of this property is held in a corporate status, the owners are selling the corporation, new owners will simply change the board of directors and continue in the same fashion as the current owners but with updates for continued enjoyment.
