A Jungle/Birdwatcher's Paradise in southern Costa Rica
Hidden in the jungle of remote Piedras Blancas National Park in southern Costa Rica, Esquinas Rainforest Lodge is surrounded by untouched wilderness. It is a hot spot for birdwatchers and nature lovers wishing to experience the sounds and sights of a tropical rainforest in a tranquil, undisturbed atmosphere.
There are 18 rooms, rustic elegance, a very impressive large, thatch roofed restaurant, including bar and a Lovely Salt water swimming pool. The 37-acre private reserve and the adjoining forest of Piedras Blancas National Park attract over 300 species of birds, almost 100 species of mammals and many amphibians and reptiles. By planting thousands of trees in nearby La Gamba, the lodge has been certified as 100% carbon-neutral. Esquinas is a leader in sustainability and has been awarded a Certificate of Sustainable Tourism from the Costa Rican Tourism Board.
Esquinas Rainforest Lodge offers a large variety of tours and excursions that lead through a jungle with a biodiversity equal to nearby Osa Peninsula and Corcovado National Park. Activities include hiking, bike tours, birdwatching, and boat and kayak tours in nearby Golfo Dulce. We are located near the village of La Gamba, only three miles off the Interamerican Highway and a 30-minute drive from Golfito airport. The lodge is accessible by car all year.

I had met a man named Michael Schnitzler probably around 1990. Hard to believe it was 34 yrs ago ! He pulled up in a boat when I was living Oceanfront and 45 mins from Golfito by boat only, no roads, no electricity Michael was making his way around the Golfo Dulce meeting the gringos living along this remote stretch of coastline. Years later I would learn he was a violinist from Austria, performing in a quartet traveling the world, I could not imagine. He hardly fit that picture, he was barefoot, pants rolled up as he got out of the boat. Michael’s tale was the same as so many of us, he came to visit, fell in love and purchased a lovely rustic cabin perched high on the bay opening into the Golfo Dulce, he lived like we did. No Electricity, Generator and maybe some Solar, his passion was the Rainforest.
In 1991, the Esquinas forest in southern Costa Rica, one of the last unprotected lowland tropical rainforests on the Pacific coast of Central America, was declared a national park by presidential decree. However, since all land was in private hands, it could only be catalogued as a "paper park" until it was owned by the Costa Rican national park service. Exploitation permits to use these lush forests had been issued before the declaration of the park and deforestation continued, inflicting irreversible damages upon the Esquinas Forest and jeopardizing the objectives of the decree.
The property, most of which had exploitation permits for logging, has been donated to the Costa Rican government and become part of new Piedras Blancas National Park; logging in these areas has ceased. "Rainforest of the Austrians" has also donated funds to the National Park Foundation for the employment of park wardens, and to Zoo Ave and Pro Felis for the reintroduction of scarlet macaws, margays and ocelots into the Esquinas forest
Later that year, Michael Schnitzler, the well-known classical violinist from Vienna, founded a non-profit organization called "Regenwald der Osterreicher" ("Rainforest of the Austrians") with the goal of raising funds to buy property in the Esquinas Forest. By 2005, over 15,000 mostly Austrian individuals had donated about EUR 2,000,000, enabling the purchase of about 31 square kilometres of rainforest.

The tour boat and 75 hp motor are included as well as WIFI satellite and Internet.
With 4000 guest nights per year and clientele from more than 50 Costa Rican travel agencies, this lodge provides a great opportunity to investors who are committed to conservation and offers high potential to expand on the international tourism market. The owner is selling because he has retired and travel has become an important part of his lifestyle.
