Over the years the small community of ‘La Gamba’ has become known due to the Esquinas Rainforest Lodge, also known as the ‘Rainforest of the Austrians’, Piedras Blancas National Park borders the property owned by Esquinas Rainforest Lodge and was established in 1991, the lodge was created to provide the community a new opportunity to work together and preserve the Rainforest, instead of cutting it down. To this day it is a ‘birders paradise’ and a well-known lodge amongst the birding community
It is also the ‘short-cut’ through some Virgin Jungle from highway #2, (originally known as the Pan-American Highway ) and only 12 kms to Golfito, you actually can save yourself about 24 kms by taking this short-cut, that is, if the rains haven’t been too intense and there hasn’t been any washouts. New bridges have replaced driving through streams and each year the improvements help to make this drive more enjoyable. I particularly enjoy this drive when leaving Golfito and the day is dawning, the forest and distant mountain views are amazing, driving through the nature is so much more enjoyable rather than racing on the highway. It’s one of the simple wonders of living here and I don’t mind the slow travel as my eyes feast on God’s beauty, thankful to be alive and in Costa Rica! Once you hit that Highway Its full tilt as cars whiz by passing tractor trailers and a marathon to see how fast they can make the drive to San Jose begins.
This flat 10 Acre parcel is on the same road and about 800 mts before the Esquinas Rainforest Lodge and 4 kms from Highway #2. It’s a pleasant area mixed with African Palm plantations, grazing cattle and Rainforest covered hills leading to Piedras Blancas National Park and very tranquilo still, there is very little movement, it’s an agricultural community, with only one pulperia in La Gamba, a gradeschool, church and the traditional soccer field, I noticed some rental rooms and with the European influence often travelers and or students are visiting the lodge and walking around the community so it’s a bit odd to see blond haired gringas walking about
The 10 Acres more than likely had been covered with bananas, as well as the surrounding acreage, after the Banana Company left the area in the mid 80’s, local farmers planted African Palm to fill the void and provide a living for themselves. To this day the land is old pasture with a few grazing cattle, a better usage would be to plant Trees once again or perhaps Construction Grade Bamboo which takes only a few years to grow before harvesting. Fruit? We could surely use more lemons, oranges and citrus! Perhaps you have another use in mind, a family compound, or build with sustainable goals in mind, create a small housing community, this is probably one of the only flat vacant 10 Acres closest to Golfito as we are lacking modern, American style housing. This could be a very nice project, a large pond ( I noticed a swale towards the center of the land, this may be a good sign that the creation of a pond or water feature, could be easily built and a private home , rentals, or the like. I’ve been here long enough to know, housing is badly needed, Golfito has no vacant land nearby to expand. This is a major drawback for our community.
The New Marina, If you are not aware of the new Marina (and only 10 kms to the 10 Acres) it was recently built in Golfito and soon one of the first ‘Marina Villages will begin with sales of Condos or Villas. This is a major advancement for Golfito, the quality of construction and size of boats and luxury Cruisers (up to 200 feet) will draw a new crowd of interested persons. For those not wanting to purchase a Condominium, we have limited choices in the immediate area. The option of a Rainforest Village (my idea of a project) built on your 10 Acres could be exciting for many. We’d be happy to set up an appointment for viewing.
