Briefly, San Vito is a district and head city of the Coto Brus canton in the Puntarenas province. It is located about 271 kilometers southeast of the capital San José and close to the Panama border. The name San Vito honors the Italian saint Vitus, founder of villages, who coincidentally had the same name. San Vito is a privileged city due to its location, as it is situated in the amazing Talamanca Mountain range and surrounded by the Java River, how unique is that for a coffee growing region? “Java” has become a generic term for coffee.

We enter the property at the main gate and are let-in as we are viewed by camera, the manicured lawn has a mix of palms and pines, some fruit trees positioned about, the asphalt driveway is about 275’ long (84 mts) as it slopes down to the houses sitting on a ridge, a wide expanse beyond the homes overlooking an incredible green valley with mountains in the background.
There is roofed parking for at least 5 vehicles. Large trees tower overhead, the air is clean and cool. Tile and cement keep the entrance neat and tidy. A chalet style home, large glass windows with wrap around roof. Stepping inside the house, the door to the left is a guest room, with a set of built-in bunks, we continue through a large formal living area, void of furniture. It felt a bit sparce, tiled open floor with a fireplace, sandstone chimney facing, no clutter. A dining table and the kitchen is off to the left at the rear of the house, huge windows across the back wall, a wonderful functional kitchen, wooden cabinets, a wooden ceiling, a slate island with the lovely views of the outdoors in the background. What a view!...........then sitting off to the right corner of the house appears a cozy living room w/flat screen tv and again more glass windows all around with wonderful views, surely the TV is for nighttime viewing when it’s dark, the daytime outdoor views surpass the flatscreen TV. It’s like being in an aquarium. This is not your conventional home!
We step outside and the lawn is trim and private, you’ll never see anyone from here, it’s a private paradise with this wide-open expanse of a valley and mountains………It’s hard to express, it has such a unique feel, the glass walls allow you to feel one with nature, but pest free, it’s San Vito, 1228 meters in altitude (4028ft.) It can get breezy and cool at times. No a/c required.
The master bedroom is upstairs, a circular stairway saves space and leads us up, to a room as a foyer, or a sitting area, it could be used as an office, sewing/hobby room, or a guest room with a fold out sofa. As there are only 2 adults living here there is more space than needed, hence, wide open spaces. The home has a country feel, a lot of windows and wood. Next to the master bedroom there is another glass walled lounge, and a wonderful large bathroom and one wall for clothing alone.
Back out to the parking area we cross over to what we call ‘the rancho’ a rustic gathering outdoor cooking area on a tico stove, a great place for entertainment, a few beers and some laughs………it has a wonderful feel like only you’ll experience in CR.
The guest house had one bedroom and is located lower so from the main house you see the roof and the house appears to hang out over the valley, again, Incredible views. The home has a full-time renter currently.
If we continued down a older unused driveway leading through the forest, we connect with the 16 acres, a natural spring, an incredible forested property which has been in conservation, the botanical gardens have purchased the land next door for reforestation, there are building sites with more of these incredible valley and mountain views.

The garden and adjacent forest (365 ha total – 900 acres) also have an impressive diversity of native plants (2,000 species). Over 425 species of birds have been censused around Las Cruces as well as 800 species of butterflies, more than 100 species of mammals (of which over 60 are bats), and there is a high diversity of reptiles and amphibians.
