Over the years Margarita has been a well-known figure in our community. I remember when I first arrived in Golfito 35 yrs ago she had a popular Soda (small eatery) and she was very ‘gringo friendly’. Being that Costa Rica for me at the time was so ‘foreign’ and my Spanish was limited, anyone that ‘catered’ to gringos, was friendly and had pretty waitresses rated high on my list.
Everyone knew Margarita, she had been in Golfito since the days of the Banana Company and loved to laugh and hug. Back in the day there was always something to laugh about, no prices on menus, prices were determined by the owners mood and clients appearance but back then it was all inexpensive.
As time passed Margarita purchased a parcel of land just outside of Golfito and built a large Thatch roofed Rancho, my friend built the wooden bar, I used my router and made a wooden sign to put behind the bar and we’d visit whenever we were in town, drank ice cold beers and she’d cook up fresh fish and fries, she remains a friend to this very day.
As the years passed, her son grew, moved to the states and he funded the cabins so Margarita would have additional income as visitors into town would drive from San Jose to go shopping at our Freeport.
Her business remains open but leased to some well-known proprietors featuring Karaoke on the weekends, it’s a very popular spot with the Tico working crowd as they enjoy kicking up their heels on our popular ‘Sundays’ as the Freeport is closed on Mondays. Margarita is now in her 80’s, a bit more laid back and can be seen sitting on her porch at her house next door to the Rancho.
